The work of Heather Vickers focuses on depicting horses in unusual poses, showcasing them in dynamic actions such as jumping, running, twisting, and turning. The compositions often feature overlapping horses, with some depicted individually or running away from each other.
The concept behind the artwork goes beyond the physicality of horses. As an adult, Vickers recognizes the strength and power of horses, both in their bodies and spirits. However, despite their immense power, horses are also fragile creatures, especially in their delicate legs. The artist draws a parallel between the vulnerability of horses and that of humans. Although humans may lack the same physical strength as horses, they share a similar vulnerability in their bodies, which can be easily damaged. This exploration of vulnerability invites contemplation on the human condition and the delicate balance between strength and fragility.
Headwinds
2021. Charcoal on Paper. “This piece was the beginning of the equine journey. I always loved drawing horses as a child. It was rewarding going back to this subject. Headwinds was created to show that even the strongest creatures can tumble. I use the horses as a metaphor for emotion, moods, and mental health.” - Heather Vickers

The pattern, “Honeysuckle,” was designed in 1883 by May Morris, William Morris’s daughter.

Strawberry Thieves
2024. Charcoal and Acrylic.
Strawberry Thieves is one of William Morris’s most popular designs. He based the pattern and name on the thrushes that frequently stole the strawberries in the kitchen garden of his countryside home. Two of these three appear to be bolting from some sort of trouble like being in the neighbor’s garden! The third horse looks as if it is squealing, possibly annoyed with the other two. Horse squeals are often associated with conflict or annoyance.

Daisy

Horses communicate through their body language and this Appaloosa appears curious. Pausing and looking straight at the viewer, the horse hesitates, just for a moment. The pattern is adapted from Morris’ tapestry called “The Forest” in 1887.
