Intermediate Watercolor Workshop
Delve deeper into watercolor with one of our intermediate series classes! These classes are about finding your artistic signature and exploring different styles and approaches. Each class focuses on a different topic and a few different tools. We’ll start the class with warmups and exercises before moving on to the final piece.
While there is no prerequisite class requirement the instructor highly recommends you take the Intro to Watercolor Workshop if you have no prior experience in watercolor.
Students are encouraged to bring any watercolor supplies they have but the teacher will provide supplies who those that don’t. Watercolor paper, paints, brushes, masking fluid, and tracing paper will be provided.
Workshop Descriptions:
Floral Patterns
Inspired by William Morris’s floral wallpaper we will explore how to paint floral patterns and use new tools like tracing paper, masking fluid, and watercolor pencils. We will also go over how to mix watercolor tube paints.
Self-Portraits
Learn how to paint facial features and draw from observations made from photos and a mirror. Students will draw and paint self-portraits. No drawing or painting experience is required and students are encouraged to explore their artistic style rather than aiming for realism. We will use new tools such as watercolor pencils. We will also go over how to mix watercolor tube paints. Students are recommended to take photos of themselves to bring to class or bring a hand mirror.
Paint from Photo
Learn how to break down an image and recreate it in your art style! Make observations about color, value, shape, and composition. Learn how to scale a photo using the grid system and layer watercolor. We will also go over how to mix watercolor tube paints. We will use new tools like watercolor pencils, tracing paper, and masking fluid
Negative Painting
Train your eye to recognize and break down negative vs positive space in art. Start thinking in terms of shapes and the relation of elements in your painting to one another. This can help push the realism of your paintings. We will also go over how to mix watercolor tube paints. We will use new tools such as watercolor pencils and masking fluid.
Texture & Multimedia
Watercolor uses water to move the pigment, which means if you can change how the water flows or is absorbed by the paper then you can change the look of the paint. In this class we will explore how to achieve different textures using salt, rubbing alcohol, cling wrap, etc. Afterward, we will explore the transparent nature of watercolor and draw on top with pen, marker, gouache, acrylic, etc. We will also go over how to mix watercolor tube paints. Texture and Multimedia Class students should bring any pens, markers, etc they want to layer on top.
