A Brief Tuesday Painters History

The Tuesday Painters Guild originated in the late 1930’s, when the Lafayette Art Association was offered space rent free at 658 Main Street on the 2nd Floor. The Lafayette Art Association occupied this space in the David Linn Ross Building from 1928 until their new building opened October 2, 1960 at 101 South 9th Street. Through the years the name changed a few times before settling on the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, and the address changed in the mid-1990’s to 102 S. 10th Street. From the beginning, classes in painting and pastel were held in the Art Association’s space. Emily Benham, one of these early painters, along with a few others, formed a group and decided to continue to paint on Tuesdays. They went to lunch and returned to paint. This format continued through the years, and at times the group was nicknamed the ‘lunch bunch.’

Some members became professional artists, joining professional groups such as the Hoosier Salon and the Brown County Art Guild. Other members have exhibited work in local festivals, fairs, competitions. As a group, the Tuesday Painters have exhibited works at the Tippecanoe County Library, West Lafayette Library, and Market Square Shopping Center.

PLEASE NOTE: History of this group has been provided by current members, their memories, and a printed Guild booklet (circa 1980) with the early history of the group, members and membership information. For Additional Information or inquiries: please contact one of the Tuesday Painter members.
